Dog Behaviour Counselling & Training

Drove Behaviour Services is based at our hospital in Wroughton, and is headed by Christine Emerson a well known and highly qualified Dog Behaviourist.

Christine has been a practising Dog Behaviour Counsellor for nearly 20 years. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, writes for many local and national publications. Christine and her team offer many services to help you and your dog get the most out of life and create a relationship of mutual understanding and enjoyment. What is Dog Behaviour Counselling?
Taken literally it just means the teaching and discussion of dog behaviour. In practice, it is a team effort between someone who wants to know why a dog behaves the way it does and someone with the answer.

This department offers 9 types of service to help you and your dog and is available to anyone who needs them, whether a client of Drove or not;

1 Tailor-Made Obedience Training using reward-based methods (1 hour)

Together we create a training package to suit your own requirements. Each session is for one hour and you can have as few or as many as you wish. We come to your home and together we train the dog first in the home, then the garden and lastly out in ‘the real world’. This suits both puppy and adult dog. Great fun!

Evening and weekend appointments are available.

2 Dog Behaviour Clinic (15 mins)

A consultation at the veterinary clinic, in which we discuss a particular behavioural issue. Our recommendations may be all you need but this time also gives you the opportunity to assess whether a consultation in your home is needed instead with our Behaviourist.

3 Dog Behaviour Counselling (2 hours)

In your home we complete a questionnaire together, to help determine the cause of any unacceptable or worrying behaviour. The conclusion and subsequent recommendations are sent to you in a report and our Behavioursit will be available afterwards should you have any questions or concerns – the support does not end when they leave your home. The number of consultations needed depends on our findings and can often claim this fee back on your pet insurance.

Examples of the behaviour we can often help to overcome:

  • Fearfulness/Nervousness
  • Hyperactivity
  • Not following instruction
  • Excessive barking
  • Mood swings
  • Destruction
  • Excessive chewing
  • Aggression – all forms
  • Poor car travel
  • Depression
  • Inappropriate toileting
  • Pulling on lead
  • Chasing
  • Separation problems

4 DVD – What dogs REALLY say (1 hour)

£15.51 including postage and packing. Created by Christine Emerson but narrated by Fern the Labrador. A hilarious, very simple visual explanation of dog body language and what dogs actually do say to each other, humans, cats etc. Do you remember the programme ‘Animal Magic’? Well, just as the animals had voices, so does every dog in this DVD. The script was not made up for entertainment value, every word of every character was taken from the body language they used towards each other – it is exactly what each dog actually said.

Brace yourself, dogs get straight to the point sometimes! May aid in a better understanding of your dog’s character and therefore solve any unacceptable behaviour, but is also a perfect gift for all those who love dogs.

Orders can be made by either calling the hospital with your card details on 01793 522483 or by sending a cheque for £15.51, made payable to ‘Drove Veterinary Hospital’ to Drove Veterinary Hospital, 252 Croft Road, Swindon SN1 4RW.

5 Drove Puppy Training School

At 3 weeks old puppies start to learn and enter the 'Socialising Period' during which they can learn to either tolerate things or fear them - which would you prefer? If you don't train, habituate and socialise correctly when young you could end up with behaviour problems - don't waste this opportunity. For further information click here.
  • 4 class course - each class is 45 minutes
  • Run on Saturday Afternoon at Drove Veterinary Hospital and Tuesday evening at our Taw Hill branch
  • Open to all pups up to 22 weeks old, at start of course
  • 2/3 trainers to every 8 pups - now that's personal service!

6 Adult Dog Training

For all dogs 22 weeks - 15 years old, whether you are at 'New Starter' stage or 'Advanced'. Held every Thursday morning in the Hospital garden. 2 Trainers per class - that's almost personal training! Max 8 dogs in any class - no more crowded classrooms. Booked 4 classes at a time - £28 for the very best guidance. Includes Training Manual, clicker, gifts and games. Book Now! Click here for more information about our Adult Dog Training.

Why should the puppies have all the fun?

7 Public Talks
Christine has held many successful talks on dog behaviour at the hospital, and is available for hire at your event.

8 Socialising Walk
9.30 - 10.15 a.m. every other Saturday in Swindon.  £5 for 45 minutes of fun and frolicks with friendly dogs and expert guidance from our Behaviourist. Not suitable for dogs showing aggression (speak to Christine beforehand if unsure). Call any branch of Drove for the date of the next walk. No need to book, just turn up!

9 Dog Training/Behaviour Shop
Our Dog Behaviourist has chosen the stock, based on her many years of recommending the items to clients. Some of the less well-known but almost effective products are now more conveniently available to you. Have you tried a Buster Cube instead of a food bowl, Serene-um for anxiety or a Canny Collar to stop pulling? Most things you will need to train your dog or puppy and avoid, or treat a behaviour problem, are on display at Drove Hospital and most branches. Come and take a look!
