Bull Pre Purchase Advice Sheet

Isolate for at least 14 days.

A private TB test. For obvious reasons.

Blood sample:

Re BVD. You do not know the status of your heifers regarding BVD. Therefore a PI bull could bring in virus causing fertility problems.
Re Leptospirosis. Again a bull could be shedding lepto and infect the heifers. However you can treat and isolate a bull after coming onto farm to get around this.
Re IBR. Can cause respiratory and venereal infections.
Re Johnes Disease. A positive blood sample is definite, however a negative result is not definitive, but still definitely worthwhile.

Faecal sample:

Re Johnes Can be done in addition to blood test.
Re Liverfluke Depending on farm of origin a test can be performed or a flukicide can be used.
Re Worms/Coccidiosis Test or treat for these parasites. Ivermectins treatments will also deal with lice and mites.
Re Salmonella A negative test is not always conclusive as the bacteria can shed intermittently.

Conformation Good legs and feet. Testicle size. Amenable.

Fertility Check Assuming that you will probably be buying/hiring a proven bull, if not , can do semen examination. Ease of calving trait and good quality calves.

Campylobacter Can do washes and test for this.
