The environment and housing of your herd will affect their production, both directly and indirectly. For example, feed trough space and access to water have a direct influence on milk yield, while other factors such as stocking rate, bedding and cubicle design affect disease incidence and therefore production on your unit.
Independent Advice
In the course of our work as farm animal vets we see many different systems in use. We are therefore a very good source of information and independent observations and are able to give advice, either at the planning stage of a new building or handling system, or as a troubleshooting exercise.
Housing
We can advise on many factors including:
-
Cubicles v straw yards
-
Specifications and welfare requirements
-
Bedding
-
Drainage, humidity and ventilation
-
Loafing areas
-
Slurry removal
-
Feed troughs
-
Water availability
-
Isolation facilities
-
Impact and precautions on use of robotic milkers (detailed experience from current clients)
Outside
The environmental factors affecting your stock are equally important when they
are outside. The provision of enough water to your dairy herd is a critical factor e
specially when at grazing during the summer, and we can advise on the number, volume and positioning of water troughs. Similarly we can help with the design of new cow tracks, or the improvement of current surfaces, which will influence the incidence of lameness in your yard.
In an emergency please telephone (01793) 522483 (24hrs).
