Quite a few of our dairy, beef and sheep clients are farming organically, mostly in conjunction with the Soil Association. This way of farming asks for different management practices and veterinary knowledge. There is even more emphasis on welfare and prevention of disease than in conventional farming and certain drugs cannot be used before a veterinary diagnosis is established.
Our extensive experience of dealing with organic issues include:
-
vaccination strategies
-
prevention and management of endoparasites (worms, liverfluke)
-
prevention and management of mastitic and high cell counts cows
-
managing fertility issues avoiding hormonal treatments if possible
-
advisory management meetings
One of the more important differences between organic and conventional farming is the management of the land. The use of artificial fertilizers and weed killers are avoided and the land is grazed less intensively. This has obvious environmental benefits.
Some of our clients sell their own produce on farmers markets or directly from the farm to the public. Otherwise you might want to look out for their local produce in the supermarkets.
