Exotic pets have very different needs from dogs and cats – and finding a vet with the right knowledge and experience can be a real challenge. Our in-house exotic species service means you no longer need to travel to a referral centre for expert care.
Whether you have a rabbit, reptile, tortoise, bird or small exotic mammal, we can see them right here in Swindon.
Rabbits
Rabbits are wonderful companions, but their health needs are quite different from those of cats and dogs. Common concerns include dental disease, gut stasis, respiratory infections, abscesses and reproductive problems. We can provide everything from routine health checks and vaccinations through to more complex investigations and surgery.
Reptiles
Whether you have a bearded dragon, leopard gecko, corn snake or monitor lizard, reptiles require species-specific expertise that goes well beyond general veterinary knowledge. We are experienced in diagnosing and treating conditions including metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, skin shedding problems, parasites and nutritional deficiencies. We can also advise on husbandry to help prevent health issues before they arise.

If you have registered a new reptile with us we’d love you to take a few minutes to complete our reptile husbandry questionnaire to help us understand your pet’s environment and care, before your appointment. The more we know, the better placed we are to help.
Tortoises and terrapins
Tortoises and terrapins have very specific environmental and dietary needs, and many of the health problems we see are linked to husbandry at home. We can carry out health assessments, treat conditions such as respiratory infections, shell injuries and reproductive problems, and provide practical guidance on hibernation, diet and housing.
Birds
From budgies and cockatiels to parrots and birds of prey, avian medicine requires a level of expertise that very few local vets possess. Our exotic species vet completed a residency in avian medicine and has treated birds of all kinds alongside European specialists. We can assess and treat respiratory disease, feather problems, beak and nail issues, injuries and a wide range of internal conditions.
Exotic small mammals
Guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, rats, degus and other small exotic mammals all have their own unique health requirements. We offer health checks, dental assessments, surgical procedures and treatment for a wide range of conditions specific to these species.

Do I need a referral to book an exotic species appointment?
No. You do not need a referral from another vet. If your exotic pet is already registered with us, you can book directly. If you are not yet a Drove client, you are very welcome to register and book in.
Which species do you see?
We see rabbits, reptiles (including lizards, snakes and geckos), tortoises, terrapins, birds of all types and exotic small mammals including guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, rats and degus. If you are unsure whether we can see your pet, please give us a call and we will be happy to advise.
Where is the exotic species service based?
Our exotic species vet is based at Drove Veterinary Hospital, 252 Croft Road, Swindon SN1 4RW. This service is not currently available at our branch practices.
Can you carry out surgery on exotic species?
Yes. We are able to perform a range of surgical procedures on exotic patients. Our hospital facilities and in-house diagnostics – including imaging, CT and laboratory services – mean your pet has access to a high standard of care on site.
What should I bring to an exotic species appointment?
It is helpful to bring any previous veterinary records if you are a new client, along with details of your pet’s diet and husbandry setup. For reptiles and small mammals, bringing them in a secure, familiar enclosure can help reduce stress during the journey.
Are exotic pets covered by the Lifetime Care Club?
Our Lifetime Care Club is currently designed for dogs and cats. Please speak to our team about the best options for your exotic pet.
What if my exotic pet needs out-of-hours emergency care?
Please call us on 01793 522 483 and our team will advise on the most appropriate course of action. Out-of-hours exotic emergencies may need to be directed to a dedicated exotic emergency provider, and we can guide you to the right support.
